Bear with us …. Whilst at times it may appear that progress is slow, we can assure you that progress is being made behind the scenes. The confidential and sensitive nature of live and ongoing planning enforcement matters means that we are only able to provide you with a more detailed update when the case is closed (giving you the reasons for closing the case), or if and when formal action is taken (for example if an enforcement notice is served).  We are sure that you will appreciate the importance of this, so that the outcome of our investigations are not compromised.

The Council’s approach is to resolve matters through substantive negotiations to achieve voluntary compliance without the need for instigating any further, more serious measures. Enforcement Action is used as a last resort, only when a thorough investigation has taken place and all other avenues have been exhausted.

In deciding whether it is appropriate, proportionate and in the wider public interest to take further action, the Council exercises the discretionary approach to planning enforcement matters, acting as advocated by national planning guidance set out in the National Planning Policy Framework (2024) (NPPF).
